About the Department

Department of Chemistry started its journey as an intermediate department way back in 1948 under the affiliation of the Calcutta University. In the year 1958, the affiliation was extended to the undergraduate course with B.Sc. (Pure Science General). In 1960-61, after the establishment of the Burdwan University, the college got its new affiliation to the Burdwan University and in the year 1983, the University permitted the opening of Chemistry Honours course with 15 seats at the initial level. The faculty of the department then consisted of four full time lecturers, two full time demonstrators and three part-time lecturers. At present the department is nurtured by three full-time and one SACT teacher; two of whom are specialized in the branch of Inorganic Chemistry, one in Organic Chemistry and onein Physical Chemistry. To cope up with the CBCS and NEP 2020 curriculum, the department has developed fivecommendable laboratory infrastructures for the benefit of the undergraduate students. The Departmental seminar library has ample collection of books with different disciplinesof about 322 books (text and reference) for the use of the students as well as for the teachers. The students have the liberty of expressing their views, creativity and transmitting important messages by publishing the Department Wall Magazine ‘RESONANCE’, being published annually. To make the teaching learning attractive department organizes add-on courses, seminars, educational tours, quiz competitions and seminars by eminent scientist or by students themselves. ICT enabled / smart classroom add up to the excellence of the infrastructure of the department. A separate computer with internet facility has been provided to the departmental students for preparing their power point presentations, downloading electronic study materials etc. The overall performance of our students in the university examinations as well as in the national level competitive examinations is quite good. The alumni of this department have excelled themselves in different academic and non-academic fields. Department of Chemistry continues to shape young minds to excel in the field of chemistry.
