About The Department
The De
partment of Bengali at Netaji Mahavidyalaya began its journey in 1948, the same year the college was established. At that time, the college was affiliated with the University of Calcutta and offered Intermediate courses. In 1957, the institution was upgraded to a degree college, and the department started teaching Undergraduate General and Honours courses.
After the establishment of The University of Burdwan, the college came under its affiliation. Over the years, the department has earned a reputation for academic excellence through the achievements of its dedicated teachers and talented students. In 2008, the department introduced the Postgraduate (M.A.) programme in Bengali under The University of Burdwan.
The department believes in both academic and creative learning. Every year, students participate in educational tours and fieldwork to gain practical experience. Regular seminars, discussions, and literary activities help broaden their knowledge. Students are also encouraged to take part in recitation, music, dance, drawing, quizzes, and other cultural programmes. The departmental wall magazine, Sisriksha, reflects their creativity and literary talent.
The Bengali Department celebrated a successful alumni reunion in 2023, where many distinguished former students from different parts of the state and the country returned to their alma mater. Their presence inspired both teachers and students and strengthened the department's sense of community.
Today, the Department of Bengali is known as one of the oldest and most respected departments of Netaji Mahavidyalaya. With the joint efforts of teachers, students, and alumni, it continues to promote the study of Bengali language, literature, and culture in a vibrant and friendly academic environment.
