About the Department

 

Journey of the Department of History dates back to the foundation of the college in 1948 offering Intermediate Course of study of the subject under the University of Calcutta. In the year 1957 started B.A Pass course of the subject under the same University. After the establishment of the University of Burdwan in 1960, the college, obviously the Department came under this University with B.A Pass Course in History and one year University Entrance (10+1) Course of the subject. The Honours Course of the Department was started from the Academic Session 1995-1996.

The Department has competent and sincere members of teaching staff who are regularly engaged in serious academic exercises like attending seminars, presenting research papers in National Seminars, publishing books, articles in edited books and in peer reviewed journals. A National Seminar was organized by the Department on 22 -23 February, 2017 on “Indian National Movement : Mobilisation of Masses”.

Teachers of the Department are serious in taking classes, teaching according to the Syllabus and completing the syllabus even by taking extra and tutorial classes. Class Tests are arranged on scheduled time for continuous assessment of the students. The Department organises subject-based seminars by Guest Speakers ; arranging quiz, Group Discussion and Seminar by the students on subjects or topics related to their syllabus to improve their knowledge , enrich their personality and fluency in speaking ; organising educational excursions etc. Teachers of the Departrment always perform academic, personal and career counseling of the students outside the classes. The Department has a record of good results in the University Examinations. It is noteworthy that in the year 2010 and 2014 Priyanka Meta and Suman Patra respectively stood First Class first in the University of Burdwan and they added a new feather to the cap of the glory of the Department. Many more ex-students have made their mark in the field of higher studies.

The Department publish wall-magazine named ‘SHILALIPI’ at a regular interval which helps the students to express their original thoughts in terms of creative writing. Departmental Library is equipped with a good number of Text and Reference books for the use of the students as well as of the teachers. Above all, the Department is keen in upholding the truth that the teaching is a mission, not a profession which is manifested itself in the happy, healthy academic environment and cordial teacher-student relationship.
