Scope and Importance/Introduction of the Department

Established in 1948, the Department of English is as old as the college. In the beginning only the General course was taught. The Honours course was introduced in 1996. Since then, the teachers have tried to cater to the academic need of the students with whole-hearted commitment. In addition to the close textual analysis of the texts ensuring the students’ understanding of the syllabus prescribed by the University of Burdwan, the teachers encourage the students to expand their reading interest and to relate their experience to contemporary literary trends, criticism, theories and cultural practices. The devotion and hard work of all of the faculty members is reflected in the uniform brilliant success of the students in the university examinations over the years. The students are encouraged not only towards academic enterprises but also to enhance their skill in the co-curricular activities where they attain excellence with surprising performance and achievements.

A large number of students are pursuing post-graduation and research programme from reputed universities of India including IITs. Many of them are well placed in reputable Govt and private sectors of service. Members of the faculty are engaged in research activities as well as publish books from reputed publishing houses. Research papers by the faculty members are also published in distinguished national, international journals and edited volume as well.

Students, besides borrowing books from the Central Library of the college, are allowed to read books from the departmental Seminar Library. Right now, the number of the books in the seminar library is 329. The department maintains the ractice of holding regular classes with full co-operation from the students. There exists a good bonding between the teachers and the students. Teachers’ Day is observed every year in the department with zeal and splendour. Departmental wall magazine ‘Flint’ is rought out every year with utmost zest of students and teachers, Principal being the patron of it. The department takes pride in witnessing successful, hardworking, kind and sensitive students who strive to connect themselves with the bigger world with their creative insight and innovative perception.

Mission of the Department

  • To expose the students to a wide range of British, American and Indian English and other kinds
    of Postcolonial Literature.
  • To develop the four-fold language skills (LSRW) in the students.
  • To enrich the knowledge of the students in English Grammar.
  • To make the students eligible for getting enrolled in the PG course in the subject.
  • To make the students competent for appearing at different competitive examinations, and
    thereby, creating scope for job opportunities.

  • REMARKABLE PERFORMANCE: Nilanjana Saha was placed in the first class first position in the 3 year Honours Degree Examination – 2019 securing 71% marks
  • STUDENTS’ PROGRESSION REPORT: 80% in PG courses, a few in M. Phil. and in PhD Programmes
  • FUTURE PROFESSION: A large number of students get engaged in jobs both at the private and public sector mainly in teaching profession. Remarkably, the following candidates have become Assistant Professor:
